1. Fragrance Free Formula to Moisturise
- After an IPL treatment, some people may experience mild soreness, depending on how sensitive their skin is. Since the hair follicles have been burned, some slight irritation is expected. The best thing to do is use a fragrance-free moisturiser.
- Avoid applying harsh formulas or scents to your skin that might irritate or burn your hair follicles. Natural aloe vera or Aquaphor can be calming when applied topically to moderately irritated skin.
2. Don’t Pluck or Wax Between the Treatment
- IPL works best in areas where your hair follicles are intact, so avoid waxing or plucking in the treated region. This ensures you’ll be one step closer to your desired outcomes when conducting a follow-up session. A small amount of shaving or trimming shouldn’t cause any issues, but wait a few days before attempting any additional hair removal on your skin! The IPL requires patience. Excessive therapy application can cause skin irritation and prolong the hair removal procedure.
3. Exfoliate Gently to Promote Hair Shedding
- Avoid focusing on exfoliation for the first 36 hours after an IPL treatment. If your skin is less sensitive, gently massage the region where the hair is removed with a gentle loofah or washcloth. Choose a creamy body wash or a basic sensitive-skin recipe. If you exfoliate your hair lightly, the hair should fall out easily if you have excessive shedding. Steer clear of causing irritation to the skin or pushing out hair that isn’t ready!
4. Don’t Go in the Sun Without Sunscreen
- Shouldn’t getting a glowy tan be the next step for everyone who undergoes treatments to achieve smooth skin? NO! The best advice at this time of year is to stay inside, cover-up, and apply a lot of SPF. If you apply sunscreen on your legs, underarms or bikini line in addition to your face, you may already be using one on a daily basis.
- Since your skin is more sensitive than usual, you don’t want UV damage or a painful sunburn to undo all of your hard work. Stick to an SPF of at least 30, and for extended outdoor sessions, use one of at least 50 for everyday use.
5. Avoid Excess Heat and Sweating
- Your hair follicles are so sensitive that excessive sweating in saunas or steam rooms can also irritate them. Before returning to your regular schedule, let your skin take a few days to acclimatise to the therapy. This will lessen any post-treatment redness, pimples, or needless irritation.
